What does it take to sustain mental health in journalism today? At the 2025 Mental Health in Journalism Summit (#MHJS25), over 50 sessions and 170 speakers from across the globe explored this urgent question.

From trauma and burnout to leadership, innovation, and community care, a common thread emerged: the future of journalism depends on the wellbeing of journalists.

Held over three days, from October 8th to 10th, 2025, the Summit commemorated World Mental Health Day by bringing together hundreds of journalists, editors, HR professionals, founders, CEOs, and mental health experts. For the second consecutive year, the event marked a key milestone for The Self-Investigation and the media industry as a whole. This would not have been possible without the fundamental support of our co-funder, the Fred Foundation, and the 36 organizations that joined as outreach partners or sponsors.

The conversations revealed major patterns: global research is still scarce, but country-level data and regional or local initiatives are multiplying. People and organizations want to help, yet most don’t know how or where to start. The result? Dozens of promising pilots and interventions but fragmented, unstructured knowledge.

As several speakers agreed, it’s not just the content that harms; toxic newsroom cultures and precarious work conditions remain one of the biggest mental health risks.

This year, the Summit was framed under the theme “Resilience for uncertain times.” The program, which featured over 50 sessions in both English and Spanish, was co-created with an open call for session proposals.

Below are five key topics that shaped MHJS25 and the future of a healthier, more humane media industry.

1. Strengthening the Ecosystem: Why a Global Forum is Needed

Of the 800 participants registered for the Summit, we had representation from all around the world, from Mexico to India, and from Germany to Nigeria, and the program featured experts from 47 countries. The fact that the Summit is fully online allows for real inclusivity and facilitates exchanges that would otherwise not be possible.

We heard firsthand experiences and wellbeing initiatives from colleagues in Vietnam, Bangladesh, Romania, Jordan, Brazil, France, Venezuela, and many other countries. No other forum in our industry offers this kind of global exchange, even though breaking regional bubbles and learning from proven mental health strategies in newsrooms—often very similar to ours—around the world is essential. After all, many of these challenges are shared across borders.

This year, the Summit featured fewer sessions than in 2024. However, we offered a more curated and unique program. Our team doubled down on efforts to combine multiple community-submitted proposals; as a result, we had richer discussions and fostered new connections among professionals and projects. We believe this effort is essential to really move the needle and aligns with our executive director’s Nieman Lab predictions from the last couple of years: to have a healthier industry, we need to have deeper conversations, create structured peer support initiatives, and a globally connected movement.

2. Leadership & Newsroom Culture: Building Systems of Care

Good intentions are no longer enough. Newsroom leaders are realizing that “care” has to be designed, measured, and sustained at an organisational level, not left to individual effort.

As Elaine Díaz (Tiny News Collective), speaker of the panel The role of HR in supporting mentally healthy practices in difficult times, puts in this post: “you can’t “self-care” your way out of burnout. It requires strong systems, firm boundaries and tons of grace.”

Speakers from the Financial Times echoed this sentiment in their session Championing Wellbeing Across a Global Newsroom, showing how wellbeing initiatives can move from reactive to strategic when backed by leadership and data.

Across these discussions, one insight stood out: human resources teams and funders must be part of the solution, not spectators to it. Their policies, budgets, and priorities can either reinforce burnout or build resilience into the system. When HR practices and funding frameworks integrate wellbeing from the start —not as a response to crisis or a nice one-off— they help redefine what responsible journalism looks like from the inside out.

That’s why in 2024 we launched the Mental Health in Journalism Pledge. This initiative encourages organizations to cultivate a journalism culture that actively prioritizes mental health by investing in necessary resources, and recognizing that this focus on well-being is essential for maintaining journalistic excellence and integrity. Today, more than 100 individuals and 35 organizations have signed it.

3. Resilience & Trauma: Healing in the Line of Duty

From Gaza to Latin America, journalists shared stories of exhaustion, fear, and hope. In Covering Gaza: Psychological Costs and Paths to Resilience, reporters spoke of living through trauma while reporting on it, a dual reality that has reshaped the profession’s understanding of resilience.

The session Corporate support and collective care inside Ukrainian newsrooms, shared important insights on how Ukrainian journalists work and process trauma after almost 4 year of war: “Since 2022, mental health has shifted from being a personal issue to one of professional ethics — and survival for the entire media community”, Valeriia Muskharina (National Union of Journalists of Ukraine):

Freelancers –who make up a growing share of the global media workforce– also described the constant tension between flexibility and insecurity. In The Stress for Survival: Being a Freelance Journalist, participants shared how the absence of contracts, support systems, and benefits magnifies the mental toll of the work. Their stories underscored that resilience shouldn’t be an individual performance but a collective responsibility — one that must include independent journalists, too.

Resilience wasn’t romanticized; it was reframed as collective strength, boundaries, and support systems. These conversations reinforced that models of psychological safety can be replicated across contexts, proving that newsroom care isn’t a luxury; it’s key infrastructure.

4. Inclusion & Care: Gender, Equity, and Community Support

The Summit’s gender-focused panels unpacked invisible burdens that too often fall on women and marginalized journalists.

Sessions like Workplaces That Care: Childcare and Safe Spaces for Women Journalists and What About Men? broadened the conversation on wellbeing by showing that care in journalism cannot be understood solely through gendered expectations. Speakers highlighted the structural barriers faced by women — particularly mothers — and emphasized the need for childcare, physical safety, and flexible policies. What About Men? added an essential dimension, examining how male journalists often lack spaces to express vulnerability, seek emotional support, or challenge harmful “provider” narratives that shape newsroom behaviour.

Across these discussions, a shared insight emerged: journalists need more than individual coping strategies. Participants described how peer groups, solidarity circles, and cross-newsroom networks are becoming essential to exchanging knowledge, normalizing vulnerability, and treating empathy as a learned professional skill rather than a personal trait.

As speaker Parul Somani (Silver Linings) reflects below, the key themes that emerged from her workshop on resilience were: the importance of community, the power of experience-sharing and the benefit of seizing control:

We also talked about neurodiversity in the newsroom, and reinforced that every brain processes pressure differently, and that inclusive design — from work rhythms to communication styles — is just as important as any new tool. Further discussions on editing and empathy showed how feedback culture, tone, and collaboration can protect mental health as much as they shape good journalism.

5. Regional Perspectives & Grassroots Resilience: Lessons from the Global South

Speakers from Latin America, Africa, and Asia grounded the Summit in lived experience. In Conversar para sanar, Rocío Franco (Sociedad Peruana de Psicoanálisis / PUCP) reflected on their experience doing group discussions for photojournalists in Peru: “The group discussion allowed for questioning the idea of the photojournalist as an indestructible hero, to recognize themselves as vulnerable and assume the need for self-care.”

From Salud mental en acción to African Experiences of Resilience and wellbeing, participants shared country-led initiatives: peer networks, collective healing spaces, and trauma-informed training. Below is a key moment of the Summit, the opening keynote in English From Personal Struggles to Collective Strength: A Conversation on Courage and Change, which featured speakers from India, South Africa and Hong Kong.

Journalists from Myanmar and Thailand described the dual challenge of reporting from exile while raising families, and how community-led childcare and solidarity networks became lifelines in unsafe environments.

Despite limited funding and research, these stories carried optimism. They demonstrated that solutions can be replicated across borders, and that local innovations often carry global lessons.

Across every theme, MHJS25 revealed a profession in transition: from endurance to care, from silence to structure. There’s still no single blueprint, but the energy is here: journalism is beginning to heal itself.

To sustain that shift, the field needs structured knowledge, communities of practice, and the courage to treat wellbeing as both a right and a responsibility.

Most sessions at the Mental Health in the Journalism Summit 2025 were recorded.

It all started with a voice message during the early days of the pandemic.

“I’m seeing a lot of stress in my colleagues that are journalists”, I said.

Just a few days earlier, I had led a five-minute online guided meditation for a group of Spanish women journalists. They were so grateful for that brief time of inner peace that I had an aha moment: journalists need more of this, now.

But I didn’t feel like the right person to lead the way — I was ‘only’ a media professional. So I reached out via WhatsApp to the coach who had helped me recover from burnout a couple of years earlier: Kim Brice, who is also a meditation teacher.

“I know of organizations that (…) I’m sure would like to do something specific on how to meditate or how to find silence in the chaos of journalism”, I said. Then I offered to help her get a foot in the media world.

She replied within three minutes: “Yes, yes, yes. What time suits you [to talk]?” She suggested we join forces. Soon after, Spanish journalist, psychologist, and coach Aldara Martitegui came on board.

Three months later, on July 7, 2020, we held our first webinar in English — and a few weeks later, one in Spanish. To our surprise, hundreds of journalists signed up.

And just like that, the story of The Self-Investigation began. The name was inspired by the goodbye email I sent when leaving my most recent media job at the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. I stepped away to take care of my mental health. In it, I told my colleagues I had spent most of my professional life investigating the world around me — and that the time had come to investigate myself.

It’s remarkable how small actions — like spontaneously reaching out with an unassuming message to a kindred spirit — can spark such meaningful change. Five years later, we’ve trained more than 12,500 media professionals and are a full-fledged nonprofit organization, with a core team of six and a network of about a dozen collaborators. We’ve supported more than 30 media organizations in promoting emotional wellbeing within their teams, and we now lead the largest annual conference on mental health in journalism. We’re deeply grateful to everyone who has partnered with us along the way to make this possible.

After our first training, we quickly realized what media professionals needed went far beyond meditation. The data confirmed that journalists’ mental health challenges were not just a result of the pandemic: in 2022, more than 60% of the media workers in countries as diverse as Canada, Spain and Ecuador reported high levels of anxiety. At least one in five reported symptoms of depression. Rates of post-traumatic stress disorder and burnout were also rising.

Since then, research conducted across countries and on specific beats — such as investigative or climate journalism — has consistently shown that the mental health of media professionals is at risk. Toxic workplace cultures are just as damaging as the emotionally complex and morally challenging realities that journalists cover.

Over the past five years, we’ve evolved — from offering large-scale open online courses and raising general awareness about self-care, stress management, and burnout prevention — to focusing primarily on training newsroom leaders. Our goal is to help them model healthy work habits and embrace their roles as people managers with greater self-awareness, skill, and emotional intelligence. Research shows that managers have just as much impact on an employee’s mental health as their spouse — which is why this is often our starting point when helping media organizations fulfill their duty of care.

We believe that sustaining quality journalism requires mentally healthy journalists — and that, in turn, requires systemic change. That’s why we work alongside universities, unions, and other stakeholders across the media ecosystem to elevate the conversation and drive action around mental health in the workplace. Our approach has been recognized by Ashoka, the leading global organization promoting social entrepreneurship.

It’s been deeply rewarding to see that we’re not alone in this mission. A growing number of individuals and organizations are advancing the field and taking concrete steps to support media professionals — helping sustain their work in an increasingly uncertain and complex world. Together, they form a community we’re proud to be part of.

One of the most satisfying developments is that this movement includes not only voices from Anglo-Saxon countries — where mental health and wellbeing are more openly discussed — but also from regions where these topics have traditionally been taboo, especially in the Global South. We’re proud to serve as a convener and promoter of these diverse perspectives. In last year’s edition of the Mental Health in Journalism Summit, we featured 174 speakers from 46 countries — and we’re looking forward to welcoming an equally global mix of voices this year. Register now to join us online from October 8–10!

Today, we’re turning five — and we hope to sustain our nonprofit for many more years to come. But let me share a secret: our wildest dream is to cease to exist.

We envision a media industry where individuals and organizations make mental health and emotional wellbeing a core business priority and strategic value. We believe this is possible — by building a movement of advocates and inspiring change through real examples of what’s working, both within and beyond the industry.

Change and innovation are within reach — and they don’t need to be costly or burdensome. We invite you to join forces, just as Kim, Aldara, I, and many others did five years ago, so we can accelerate progress together.

This is the fifth in a series of blog posts, culminating with a toolkit for fact-checkers on mental health and well-being. Learn more about the program here.

By Emma Thomasson, Training Manager of the program Mental Health Leadership for Fact-Checkers.

Journalists and fact-checkers often describe themselves as adrenaline junkies. They love the thrill of breaking news and the sense that the work they do matters. But that means that they often struggle to differentiate between what is urgent and what is important. In many newsrooms, the urgency of responding to external events — be it an election, a coup or a natural disaster — means there never seems to be time to think about important, but non-urgent matters, like the wellbeing of the team. For managers, that can mean it is hard to prioritise making strategic plans, or checking in with their staff, or making sure their own needs for guidance and career development are being met.

That is one of the main takeaways of the participants in the Mental Health Leadership for Fact-Checkers Program, a 6-month program of training and coaching for leaders of fact-checking organizations run by The Self-Investigation. Participants noted that the program was particularly valuable because it forced those leaders to block time in their calendars to think, learn and share experiences with peers in a similar position.

1. Stop working as if everything is an emergency

As the program drew to a close, several participants pledged to keep up the habit of reserving slots in their calendar to break the lure of working in a “crazy busy” way described by emergency room doctor Daria Long in her TED talk.

Long recommends applying the ER principles of triage to prioritise everyday challenges.

Red – immediately life-threatening

Yellow – serious, but not immediately life-threatening

Green – minor

Black – the worst scenarios, when nothing can be done

Instead of reacting to everything as if it is a category red emergency, as we often do in the newsroom, we need to work out when things are not that serious and find ways to delegate them, or make time for them when the real reds issues have been dealt with. We also need to beware of spending too much time worrying about some things in the black category, when it may be better to admit that is a waste of effort and move on.

Another way of deciding what to prioritise is to focus first on those tasks that are both urgent and important, an idea said to have been practised by former U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Tasks that are important but not urgent can be scheduled for later, those that are urgent but less important can be delegated and those that are not urgent or important can be deleted.

Jency Jacob, managing editor of BOOM Live in India, says he has an informal rule that he does not want to have meetings during lunch hour. That gives him time to eat lunch at a fixed time and also flexibility to relax post-lunch before the next meetings are scheduled.

Lorena Martinez, Head of Editorial Operations in Europe at Logically Facts says: “I usually have a packed agenda and often find myself multitasking. To prioritize important tasks, I block off dedicated time in my calendar each week to ensure I have uninterrupted focus time.”

Others pledged to implement a rule that they have a 15-minute buffer between meetings. That might mean that one hour meetings are kept to 45 minutes.

2. Make time to connect

When faced with a deluge of news, teams struggle to make time to connect on a human level, particularly if some people are working remotely. That makes misunderstandings and conflict more likely. Many of the participants in the program highlighted the value of sharing experiences with other fact-checking organizations from across the globe during the program and pledged to make more time for building relationships in their teams.

Blanka Zöldi, Editor-in-Chief at Lakmusz in Hungary, says every second Monday her team works a short day and holds a team meeting in a cafe for about an hour and a half where people can share any topic on their minds.

“It’s a good opportunity to zoom out from the rush of the daily work,” she noted, “and to reflect on “bigger” professional questions such as the most efficient tools, formats for fact-checking, to reflect on current events and, if needed, to talk about our priorities and strategies as a team. But, most importantly, it’s an opportunity to be together regularly, to listen to each other, and to create a safe space to ask questions, to talk about any worries or fears, and also to share what interests and motivates each of us.”

Alessandra Monnerat, Assistant Editor of Brazil’s Estadão Verifica, has organised a monthly online “buddy” coffee. She pairs up people in her team for a 15-minute informal meeting: “The feedback I received was very positive; some of them noted they discovered new things about their peers they would never find out by simply working together in a virtual environment. I think activities like these are important to build confidence and teamwork.”

3. Make a plan for accountability

The fact that the program combined workshops with one-on-one coaching helped to hold leaders accountable for their plans to support their own and their team’s mental health.

However, now that the program is ending, we asked participants to come up with a plan to help them set and reach short-, medium- and long-term goals for themselves and their teams. We asked them to answer these questions to develop a personal action plan.

WHAT actions (behaviors, practices, policies)

HOW you will do it and be held accountable (tools, resources, metrics)

WHO can help support you in your commitment (team, audience, community)

Katarina Subasic, editor in AFP’s fact-checking team for Europe, says she plans to set reminders in her calendar so she sticks to her plan.

Other participants have pledged to ask peers, colleagues or friends and family to check in on them to make sure they are sticking to their plans.

You just read the lessons learnt by our English-speaking cohort, if you speak Spanish don’t miss the takeaways from the Spanish-speaking cohort.

The feature image has been AI-generated.

Fact-checkers face a unique set of stressors tied to the nature of their work—tight deadlines, online harassment, exposure to disturbing content, and the relentless demands of a fast-paced digital environment. Their work often brings them face-to-face with emotionally difficult stories and the darker corners of the internet, which can chip away at their sense of optimism and faith in humanity. Over time, this can lead to burnout, depression, vicarious trauma, or even moral injury.

Why This Toolkit Matters

The Mental Health Leadership Toolkit for Fact-Checkers is a collection of five practical guides focused on key mental health challenges in the newsroom. These resources were developed through a training and coaching program for leaders from 14 fact-checking organizations across countries like Spain, Brazil, India, the US, and Bolivia. The toolkit highlights the urgent need to foster a lasting culture of mental health awareness and proactive care within fact-checking teams.

What makes this toolkit especially valuable is that fact-checkers—regardless of location or organization size—often grapple with similar mental health challenges. This shared reality underscores the importance of equipping fact-checkers (and journalists more broadly) with tools to protect their own well-being and support their colleagues.

What’s Inside the Toolkit

The Mental Health Leadership Toolkit for Fact-Checkers covers five critical areas:

Burnout Prevention: The Toolkit highlights the importance of recognizing stress early and preventing burnout before it takes a toll. It offers practical tips for both individuals and managers, including setting clear boundaries, normalizing open conversations about mental health, and leading by example through self-care.

Digital Boundaries: In today’s “always-on” culture, setting healthy digital boundaries is more challenging—and more necessary—than ever. The Toolkit provides guidance on how to minimize digital overload, from turning off unnecessary notifications to scheduling non-urgent emails and setting clear communication norms within teams.

Vicarious Trauma and Moral Injury: Fact-checkers are regularly exposed to harmful and distressing content, putting them at risk of vicarious trauma and moral injury. The Toolkit helps individuals and managers recognize the warning signs and offers strategies to reduce unnecessary exposure and protect team well-being.

Online Harassment: Online abuse is an unfortunate reality for many fact-checkers, taking a serious emotional toll. The Toolkit offers practical advice for preparing for harassment, responding effectively, and prioritizing self-care afterward. Managers will also find guidance on how to support team members who experience online attacks.

Psychological Safety: A healthy newsroom culture is one where people feel safe admitting mistakes, asking questions, expressing vulnerability, and sharing new ideas. The Toolkit outlines steps individuals and managers can take to foster psychological safety, such as practicing active listening, showing vulnerability themselves, and embracing a culture of curiosity and learning.

Join the Movement for Healthier Newsrooms

If you’re a fact-checker or newsroom leader, this Toolkit is an invaluable resource to help you and your team build a more supportive, resilient, and mentally healthy workplace. Prioritizing mental health isn’t just good for individuals—it strengthens the fact-checking community as a whole.

The Toolkit is also available in Spanish.

The Mental Health Leadership Toolkit for Fact-Checkers was developed with generous support from the INTERNATIONAL FACT-CHECKING NETWORK

By Emma Thomasson, Training Manager of the program Mental Health Leadership for Fact-Checkers.

What is psychological safety?

The job of fact-checking is all about establishing more certainty about what is true, engaging critical thinking and correcting false information. That doesn’t leave much room for mistakes, nor for admitting weakness or vulnerability, at least not in public.

Against that backdrop, it can be a challenge for managers of fact-checking teams to create a culture of psychological safety. This is defined as a workplace culture where it is OK for employees to admit to mistakes, ask questions, express vulnerability or suggest new ideas.

There is often confusion over what this term means. It is sometimes thought of as a counterpoint to physical safety. So when preparing for a dangerous or potentially disturbing assignment, journalists are encouraged to think about both physical safety and psychological safety (seen as synonymous with mental wellbeing). However, the term has taken on a wider meaning in the context of team leadership due to research by Harvard professor Amy Edmondson.

Edmondson says that team members only engage in close collaboration when they feel “psychologically safe”, knowing that “questions are appreciated, ideas are welcome, and errors and failure are discussable”.

“People can focus on the work without being tied up in knots about what others might think of them. They know that being wrong won’t be a fatal blow to their reputation,” she said.

Edmondson made a name for herself by studying how teams and organizations deal with mistakes. During research into drug errors in hospitals, she came to the counterintuitive conclusion that better teams seem to make more mistakes, not fewer. She eventually realized that doctors and nurses in these high-performing teams don’t necessarily make more mistakes, but they report more because they don’t fear retribution for being open about problems.

Edmondson’s insights have since been applied to many other organizations and contexts, including Google, which studied thousands of teams and concluded that the top-performing groups had five dynamics in common, with psychological safety being the most important of them.

The other key factors cited by Google are:

Dependability: members reliably complete quality work on time

Structure and clarity: a team has clear roles, goals, and plan

Meaning: team members have a sense of purpose in their work

Impact: members believe their work makes a difference.

When I was drawing this illustration of the Google conclusions at a workshop, I made a spelling mistake. Normally, I would have started afresh, but I decided it was a good way of illustrating the importance of being open about errors.

Looking at this diagram, it is clear that teams in the media industry generally have a very top-heavy pyramid. Journalists usually have a strong sense of “meaning” and “impact”. Perhaps even too much, which promotes an unhealthy obsession with work that drives us to burnout. Meanwhile, during my workshops and training sessions, newsroom leaders I have worked with admit that their teams often lack psychological safety, as well as structure and clarity.

Active listening is key for promoting psychological safety

One of the most powerful ways leaders can cultivate this culture is to practice active listening, which involves listening without judging or jumping to conclusions, and refraining from imposing your own opinions or solutions. That might sound easy but we often find it hard to resist the temptation to interrupt, while we usually jump in to fill any uncomfortable silence in a conversation. But if managers can master the technique, they often find it liberating as they no longer feel under pressure to fix the person’s problems. Often, a team member who feels truly heard will feel supported to come up with their own solution.

Here are some tips for how to practice active listening:

Face the speaker and have eye contact.

“Listen” to non-verbal cues too.

Don’t interrupt.

Listen without judging, or jumping to conclusions.

Don’t start planning what to say next.

Show that you’re listening

Don’t impose your opinions or solutions.

Here are some other ways that a leader can promote a feeling of safety in a team:

Model vulnerability – show your own humanity and humility as a leader.

Admit your own ignorance – celebrate mistakes as learning opportunities rather than shaming people who are brave enough to say they don’t know.

Invite participation eg: implement the rule in meetings that no one talks twice before everyone has a chance to talk once.

Offer feedback, celebrate success – give as much praise as criticism

Don’t avoid conflict – address problems before they spiral out of control

Encourage feedback of your leadership – don’t react to feedback with defensiveness

What are the obstacles to psychological safety?

Promoting psychological safety often demands a big shift in organization culture. If a manager wants to encourage team members to admit to mistakes or suggest new ideas, she will need to acknowledge her own fallibility and be open to constructive criticism of her own leadership. It can be time-consuming to check in with team members to make sure that psychological safety is combined with accountability to turn ideas into action.

As Rosemary Igbeka from FactCheckHub noted, “It is important to be vulnerable: we are all human. We can make mistakes.” And Eric Litke, Senior Editor, Fact Check at USA TODAY, pointed out, “It can be tricky admitting failure. I tell junior staff: ‘Here are some things I screwed up along the way.’”

The whole idea of psychological safety is very rooted in Anglo-Saxon organizational culture where challenging authority is more acceptable than in other parts of the world. Employees from countries like Serbia, Nigeria and India that have a tradition of respect for hierarchy, might find it harder to express disagreement with their managers than colleagues from countries like Britain and the United States. Likewise, it might be easier for a manager in a flat-hierarchy start-up to admit fallibility than a boss in a large top-down traditional media house.

Here are some reflections from our participants:

Katarina Subasic, AFP digital investigations editor: “In Serbia, kids in school are not encouraged to ask questions or disagree… kids are not allowed to oppose adults – hierarchy is so strict.”

Eric Litke, Senior Editor, Fact Check at USA TODAY, said: “In the US, we have an independent mindset, which sometimes means we have an oversized concept of our place in the world that makes us very assertive.”

Karen Rebelo, deputy editor, BOOM LIVE, added: “We have a flat hierarchy. We are free to speak our mind. We say if we don’t know something.”

To be clear, psychological safety isn’t always about being nice and agreeing with everyone.

This is not about creating environments where people think it is fine to slack off, or make mistakes without consequence. But if colleagues are afraid to speak up or experiment, organizations will miss out on open exchange, learning and innovation.

And successful teams need to be able to disagree and deal with conflict in a constructive way.

So managers need to be alert to their own conflict management style if they want to promote good teamwork and be prepared to vary their style depending on the situation. Sometimes, it pays to be more assertive, while other times a more collaborative approach can be more effective.

Article by AX Mina – As doing journalism seems to be getting more and more difficult around the world, we at The Self-Investigation have been reflecting with partners and speakers about why it’s so important that we’re hosting the Mental Health in Journalism Summit next week.

”In a time when democracies across the globe, particularly in some areas in Latin America, are under unprecedented strain, the role of journalists as pillars of democracy and providers of independent information has never been more critical,” writes Adamantia Lampouka from partner organization Free Press Unlimited. Lampouka is one of dozens of partners and workshop leaders who have shared with us their perspectives on the Summit and why mental health in journalism is a critical topic today.

“Yet, these same journalists face increasing precarity, systemic repression, and the relentless pressure to deliver in a rapidly changing media landscape. This is why addressing mental health in journalism is not just urgent—it is essential. Mental health support is key to fostering resilience among journalists, ensuring they can continue their vital work with the strength and clarity needed to uphold the values of free and independent press.”

Here are four other insights from our MHJS24 session leaders:

1. Journalists often witness — and experience — tremendous challenges as part of their daily work.

It’s no secret that the news is difficult and overwhelming right now, and journalists know this more than others. As Aishwarya Varma, a contributor at The Quint in India notes, “It is important to prioritize mental health in journalism because journalists are exposed to overwhelming amounts of information, which is very often related to crisis events, which can lead to burnout and decline in mental health.” Varma will be discussing the experiences of women and underrepresented groups in journalism at the Summit.

And Jessica Gabriela Arellano López from Aluna Acompañamiento Psicosocial in Mexico offered a sobering reminder that “Those who carry out critical and independent journalism constantly face threatening situations and security incidents that affect them on a personal, family, community, professional and social level.” Her session on resilience will be essential for understanding this topic more deeply.

Arellano López reminds us of the stakes: “These conditions generate impacts that hinder or prevent the right to freedom of expression; attention to mental health, seen from a psychosocial perspective, considers a comprehensive approach to strengthen journalists in their areas of psychoemotional, security and organizational dynamics, which in turns strengths their professional, political and life projects.”

2. Mental health is important for freedom of expression.

Mental health also speaks to the core values of journalism, such as freedom of opinion and expression, famously enshrined in Article 19 of the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights. “Without mental health in journalism, there is no freedom of expression,” notes Camila Andrea from Vita Activa in Colombia. Andrea is running a workshop on psychological first aid for women journalists next week. “And without diversity, equity, and inclusion, there is no good journalism.”

Australia’s Dr. Cait McMahon, a leading psychologist and consultant for mental health in journalism, will be sharing perspectives on peer support programs for journalists from 2006 to the present. McMahon echoes Andrea’s statements: “Mental health in journalism is a press freedom issue – journalists silenced through psychological injury are silenced as much as those forbidden to speak publicly by suppression.”

3. Good mental health will help our industry maintain longevity and pass the torch to the next generation.

Mental health is also a sustainability issue — for this generation and the ones to come.

“Young journalists are leaving the field during a crucial time for the future of democracy,” observes Chelsea Reynolds, Director at the Center for Culture and Inclusion in Media at Arizona State University. “We must envision a more equitable future for our industry or risk losing the watchdog of power in an increasingly oligarchic society.”

Glenn Burkins at QCity Metro in North Carolina had a similar thought: “If we intend to keep young journalists in this profession, we must be as concerned about their mental health as we are about their writing and reporting skills.”

Catch both Burkins and Reynolds in their workshop on facilitating workplace wellbeing for Gen Z journalists and young people.

4. Diversity, equity and inclusion benefit from good mental health.

As Camila Andrea noted above, mental health in journalism is good for freedom of expression and diversity, equity and inclusion. PEN America’s Holistic Safety and Security Adviser Jeje Mohamed echoed these sentiments:

“Journalism safety pillars (physical, digital, psychological and legal) are crucial for the sustainability, health and diversity of the journalism and media field and can not be treated in silos. For journalists to continue doing this critical work, and to have more diverse voices, we need to take care of our mental health and treat each other with care and support.”

Mohamed will be running a workshop on psychosocial support for online abuse self-defense, an issue that disproportionately affects women and people from marginalized and racialized communities.

And then there’s Maria Eugenia Alvarez, Director General at SembraMedia in Argentina, who will be engaging participants in how to accompany journalists living in exile: “Prioritizing mental health in a global context with so much violence allows us to have tools for care and protection. Caring for journalists means caring for the diversity of voices that can strengthen democracies.”

5. And good mental health supports good journalism.

While mental health in journalism is a good thing in and of itself, it also helps journalists do what they do best.

“Stress and burnout are the first enemies to creativity and commitment,” writes Samya Ayish, Communication Manager at ARIJ in Jordan. “We need to think about our inner soul to impact other souls.” Ayish’s session on peer support is about exactly that — how we support other souls while doing our best work.

“Without journalism, democracy is in danger,” writes Ute Korinth from Deutscher Journalistenverband in Germany. “We need journalists and good journalism to protect it. This is only possible if mental health is ensured.” Korinth will be helping us all understand how to ask if someone is okay — without being afraid of the answer.

We close with the wise words of Esther Kiragu, a freelance journalist in Kenya leading a session on creating a culture of care in journalism:

“Journalism plays a crucial role in shaping society. A healthy mind encourages creativity, critical thinking, and empathy—essential qualities for effective journalism. By prioritising mental health in journalists, we can contribute to a more informed and engaged society.”
